This is a safety issue and should be addressed immediately, not deferred.

Damaged CV axles or a bent wheel can also cause rhythmic shaking. A bent rim from a pothole hit — something that happens more than people realize on rural routes around White Oak — won’t always be visible to the naked eye but will show up immediately on a wheel balancer.

Loose or “vague” steering — where you move the wheel and there’s a delay or lack of precision in how the car responds — usually comes from worn tie rod ends, a worn steering rack, or loose steering column components. On higher-mileage vehicles, the rack and pinion itself develops internal wear that creates slop in the system. You’ll feel it as an increase in how much you have to turn the wheel before the car actually reacts. This makes highway driving tiring and parking lot maneuvering imprecise.

Stiff steering that’s gotten worse over time is a different story. In most cases, the culprit is the power steering system — either low fluid, a failing pump, or a problem with the rack itself. On electric power steering systems (common on vehicles from 2012 onward), a sudden increase in steering effort often points to a sensor fault or a motor issue that requires a scan tool to diagnose properly.

Cold-weather stiffness that loosens up after a few minutes of driving is normal to a degree, but if the stiffness persists for longer than usual or gets progressively worse over weeks, that’s a signal the system needs attention.

One thing worth mentioning: steering feel changes so gradually that most drivers adapt without noticing. A car that’s become harder to turn over six months often doesn’t register as “wrong” until the driver gets into another vehicle and realizes what responsive steering actually feels like. What Is Power Steering Fluid and Why Does It Matter?

Power steering fluid is a hydraulic fluid that transmits pressure from the power steering pump to the steering rack or gearbox. Without it, you’d be turning the wheels by muscle alone — which you can do at highway speed when there’s less resistance, but is extremely difficult at low speed or when parking.

The fluid does more than transmit pressure. It lubricates the pump internals and the rack seals, and it helps dissipate heat. ACDelco and Motorcraft both publish specific fluid specifications for their systems, and using the wrong fluid — or a generic substitute that doesn’t meet those specs — can degrade seals and cause premature wear in the pump and rack.

Power steering fluid doesn’t have a rigid replacement interval the way engine oil does, but it degrades over time. The fluid oxidizes, picks up moisture, and develops particulate contamination from seal wear. Dark brown or black fluid that smells burnt has broken down and should be flushed and replaced. Clear or light amber fluid is normal.

Checking the power steering fluid reservoir takes about 30 seconds. The reservoir is typically near the front of the engine bay, marked with a steering wheel icon. The level should fall between the min and max marks on the reservoir or dipstick. If it’s consistently low, that means fluid is going somewhere — either leaking externally or being consumed internally, neither of which resolves itself.

What Are the Signs of a Power Steering Problem?

The earliest sign most people notice is a whining or groaning noise when turning, especially at low speeds or when the wheel is turned near its full lock. This sound comes from the pump working hard with insufficient fluid or from a pump that’s starting to wear. It’s often loudest first thing in the morning and may quiet down as the fluid warms up — don’t take that improvement as a sign the problem went away.

Increased steering effort is the next stage. If parking has become physically harder than it used to be, or if you feel resistance when turning at slow speeds that wasn’t there before, the system is struggling. On a vehicle that previously had very light steering, this change can be significant enough to affect vehicle control in tight situations.

Fluid leaks are a definitive sign. Power steering fluid is typically reddish or clear, thinner than engine oil, and has a slightly sweet smell. Puddles under the front of the vehicle, or wet residue around the steering rack boots, pump, or hoses, indicate a seal or hose failure.

A steering wheel that jerks or vibrates specifically during turns — not at highway speed, but when you’re maneuvering — can also point to a power steering issue, often air in the system from a slow leak that’s been allowing air ingestion.

The Automotive Service Association advises that power steering system failures don’t always present with dramatic warning signs before becoming serious. Catching a slow leak or degraded fluid early is far less expensive than replacing a pump and rack after they’ve been damaged by running dry.

If your vehicle has electric power steering, a malfunction will often trigger a warning light on the dashboard. Don’t dismiss that light — an EPS fault can leave you with significantly reduced assist at an inconvenient moment.
