Some cars also tie the warning light to fluid level, which means it can signal a leak even before you feel anything with your foot. One sign that gets overlooked: the car takes noticeably longer to stop than it used to. Drivers adapt to this gradually and stop realizing it’s happening. If you’ve been driving the same vehicle for two years, the stopping distance you’ve come to expect may already be longer than it should be.
Signs of a Failing Starter Motor
The starter motor rarely fails all at once. It usually gives you a few weeks of warning first.
The most recognizable sign is a single loud click — or sometimes a rapid string of clicks — when you turn the key or press the start button, with nothing else happening. One solid click with no engine movement typically means the starter solenoid fired but the motor didn’t turn.
