It allows you to turn the wheel with minimal effort by amplifying your input through a pump and rack-and-pinion or recirculating ball system. Low or degraded power steering fluid makes steering stiff, can cause whining or groaning sounds when you turn, and eventually damages the power steering pump — a repair that runs $300 to $600 depending on the vehicle.

Power steering fluid doesn’t get consumed like engine oil, so if your reservoir is consistently low, you have a leak somewhere. Common leak points include the pump itself, the high-pressure hose, the steering rack seals, or the return line. A small leak left unaddressed turns into a pump replacement. Check the reservoir monthly — it takes 30 seconds.

Noise is the most obvious. Squealing, as covered above, points to worn pads. Grinding is worse — it means the pad material is gone and metal is contacting metal. At that point, you’re likely damaging the rotor with every stop. Rotors that could have been resurfaced or lasted another 40,000 miles as-is now need replacement, turning a $150 pad job into a $400+ repair.

Pedal feel is the second indicator. A pedal that sinks lower than normal, requires more pressure, or pulses under your foot all indicate specific mechanical conditions. Pulsing usually points to rotor runout (warping). A low pedal can mean fluid issues, air in the lines, or a caliper problem.

The brake warning light on your dashboard is not cosmetic. On most modern vehicles, it illuminates for three reasons: the parking brake is engaged, fluid level is low, or the ABS system has detected a fault.
